Bondi Beach Apartment – Mathieson Architects

An alternative perspective on the traditional beach aesthetic, the Bondi Beach Apartment has been designed as a more international take on a summer retreat. With impressive scale, form and materiality, the dwelling brings a sense of simplicity into the bustling beach-side setting.

The open plan kitchen – alongside the living area – is the heart of the home. The solid timber finish, stainless steel and monolithic granite island bring to the forefront the incredible craftsmanship of the fabricators and contribute to a relaxed atmosphere within the dwelling. Here, the appliances have been incorporated in a highly discreet manner. The long stainless steel benchtop was laser cut to accommodate a Gaggenau induction cooktop and downdraft for a completely seamless appearance. A selection of 400 series wall-mounted ovens – alongside the warming drawer and coffee maker – has been recessed into the central timber box which divides the back of the kitchen from the living area. Framed within a stainless steel angle, the appliances sit flush against the face of the surface, demonstrating an elevated attention to detail.

Highly resolved detailing, generous presence of light and considered materiality give this summer residence a unique sense of place and a tranquil timelessness.
